A Good Explanation of Keywords

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Trying to get a handle on keywords and how they work in your article marketing campaign? Read this article by Damadora Sarma for a good explanation:

Good Keyword Selection Techniques Boost Traffic and Search Engine Rankings!

You’ve got a website up and going, but you’re wondering why you’re not getting significant numbers of visitors, nor ranking well on the search engines. One of the main points of reference in both cases is keyword selection. Here we take a look at some techniques you can use to determine which keywords will bring focused traffic to your site, as well as improving your position on the search engines.

You need to think from the point of view of the person searching. That person is going to enter two or three words most relevant to the information they’re trying to find. As an example case, we’ll use a website which sells gardening tools and garden products.

Here’s how the search engines index sites. The spiders ‘read’ the HTML portion of each of your pages and establish the relevancy of each page’s contents to a given search. The algorithms used are fairly intelligent, picking up on both terminology and related keyword phrases. For example, if one of your pages contains an article which describes how to plant bulbs and the various tools and techniques used in the process of planting bulbs, it’s likely that page will rank well.

In this case, good keyword selections might include ‘bulb planting tool’, ’soil amendments’, ’spring blooming bulbs’, ’summer blooming bulbs’, ’soil testing’, ‘bone meal’ and so on, with the main keyword phrase being ‘how to plant bulbs’. If you were the person searching for this information, the main keyword phrase would be the most logical starting point.

On the other hand, if you do a search on that keyword phrase and come up with millions of results, you’d want to refine and focus your keyword selection to a more specific, albeit narrower audience. Suppose the focus of the article is on planting cyclamen bulbs. The searcher is looking for information on planting a specific type of bulb and would be likely to include the name of that bulb in the search query. Thus, a keyword selection of ‘plant cyclamen bulbs’ as your main keyword phrase would have less competition in results and bring more visitors to your site who are more likely to buy. The related terms within the article would need to be relevant to the particular terminology, such as ‘winter blooming’ and perhaps named varieties. Other keyword selections for the article might include some of the gardening tools and fertilizers the cyclamen planter would need.

When working with keyword selection, you want to be careful to avoid what’s known as ‘keyword stuffing’, repeating the main keyword phrase over and over. Not only does the text no longer read naturally, but the search engines are wise to this tactic. Instead of improving your rankings, you may well be penalized or not indexed at all!

It’s also best to optimize individual pages with ads and links which are relevant to the reader of that specific page. For example, alongside your article on planting cyclamen bulbs, you’d want to advertise tools, fertilizers and links to related articles on planting other types of bulbs or sites which sell cyclamen bulbs. Target your specific audience!

Keyword selection is important on every page of your site. Permeate your site with keywords and related terms that clearly defines the purpose of your website and stick with your subject area. Don’t be tempted to put up a banner ad for cell phones simply because you think everyone uses cell phones and a visitor might click through, bringing you a nice commission. This strategy only dilutes your relevancy in the search engines. However, a page of affiliate products, such as a select group of quality gardening books, will have the opposite effect and will probably make you some money, too.

Using good keyword selection techniques can do your business a world of good!

What’s the Big Deal With Backlinks?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

So what’s a backlink? And why do I care?

In simple terms, “backlinks” are links to your site from other sites all around the Web. When other sites link their pages to yours, you’ve been backlinked.

You care because backlinks are one of the primary indicators that the search engines use to decide how important your site is.

For example, say you sell deep sea fishing equipment at your online store. And so does your closest competitor, Captain Big Skinny. Both of you have websites that offer information about deep sea fishing, and a nice range of merchandise for sale.

Now let’s imagine Jack is planning a vacation, and needs some deep sea fishing gear. He enters the term “deep sea fishing gear” into Google. And he gets a list of sites that sell the stuff he’s looking to buy.

How did Google decide whether to put your site on the top of this list, or Cap’n Skinny’s? They used a measure called “PageRank.” This is a number between 1 and 10 (you want a higher number) that is assigned to your site based on how “important” it is.

Backlinks Improve Your PageRank

Okay, you need a better PageRank than Skinny so your site appears above his in the search engine results. How do you get it?

Let’s see what Google says about how to improve your site’s ranking:

“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”

Build Organic Backlinks with Content Distribution

The key to effective backlinks is they need to be “real.” In other words, having all your friends and neighbors link to your site from their blog really won’t do you much good in the search engines. You need to get backlinks from high quality sites that are relevant to your site. For example, a link from a travel blog read by sports fisherman, or a newsletter that offers advice on landing the big one.

Getting these links requires some strategic content distribution. All you need to do is write articles about deep sea fishing (how to choose the perfect pole; what bait to use for what type of fish; the best deep sea fishing spots in the Gulf, etc). Then distribute that content to niche publishers, article sites and content directories. Your article is published, along with a link back to your site, and gets in front of interested readers in your niche.

Putting All the Bait on the Line

This kind of backlinking strategy depends on two things to be successful:

  1. Distribute your content as widely as possible, by using a content distribution system that reaches thousands of sites and niche industry publishers; and

  2. Continue to distribute new content frequently, to constantly build new backlinks.

It’s like putting a thousand poles in the water all over the coast, instead of just one…you’re just plain gonna catch more fish this way!

Better PageRank = Better SEO Results

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

What’s the key to ranking in the search engines? It sure seems like it’s a moving target.

Ask any “expert” how to get your site ranked well in the search engines, and the answer will change based on the latest trend or theory. Some of the advice is spot on, some is confusing…and some is downright wrong.

So what to do?

To be found on Google and the other major search engines, follow their own advice. The key lies in your “PageRank” (PR). This number, between 1 (least favorable) and 10 (best rank), is assigned based on how much credibility Googles gives your site.

How does Google decide your PR?

According to their own Site Owner’s Help Section:

“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high quality sites that link to their pages.”

That’s pretty straightforward advice. To improve your PageRank, increase the number of backlinks from other credible sites. And the most effective and search-engine friendly way to build these backlinks is by distributing your original content and making it available to publishers, site owners and directories.

Content distribution is your key to quality backlinks.

Here’s how this work:
You write an article that relates to your industry or your specialty. For example, if you are a tax accountant, you write a 500 word article on “Money-Saving Tax Tips.” You submit that article to a content distribution service; that service makes it available to tens of thousands of publishers, bloggers, newsletter editors, content site owners and article directories. And that’s when the magic starts.

You see, each time a site owner or publisher posts your article, they also publish your “About the Author” information and a link back to your site. And we already know that each link you get from a credible source helps to improve your PageRank.

As the number of links grows, your PR improves. For best results, make sure you submit an ongoing stream of fresh content, at least one or two articles per week. You’ll not only improve your PageRank; you’ll also build your reputation as an expert in your field, and drive fresh traffic to your site from all those incoming links.

So forget the “fad of the week” and focus on what works…building a steady stream of relevant backlinks pointing to your site. Google on!
