Article Marketing for Beginners: The Trouble with Article Spinning Software

Article marketing is at least as crucial a form of Internet advertising as pay-per-click advertising. Many experts contend that it’s even more important than paying for ads. This has increased the demand for original articles. It also begs the question: is article spinning software as effective as creating articles from scratch?

Scores of article writing services have sprung up across the Web in recent years. Article marketing is big business, and entrepreneurs and writers have been able to benefit from this phenomenon.

Software developers have also responded to the increased demand for original articles. Software companies have created article spinning software in order to compete with article writers and creation services.

Article spinning software has been touted as a cheaper way to obtain original works for article marketing. Article spinning software works by taking an original article and then “spinning” it into multiple “original” articles.

Theoretically, a user can take a single article and create dozens of new articles. These “new” articles, the software makers claim, will be approved by content filters which flag duplicate content on the Internet.

Article spinning software varies in price. Programs tend to range from just over 50 dollars to a few hundred. Web business owners who plan to engage in ongoing article marketing campaigns stand to benefit most from article spinning software. However, these programs may not be all they’re cracked up to be.

Here’s how article spinning software works: a user uploads an original article into the program. The program scans the article and isolates words and phrases from the article body.

Next, the program looks for pre-programmed substitutions for those isolated words/phrases. The software removes the isolated words/phrases from the original text. It then replaces them with one of those programmed substitutions.

You can put this into perspective with some simple math. Let’s say an article spinning program isolates ten phrases from an article. For the sake of simplicity, let’s say that the program finds 12 substitutions for each of those ten phrases. This could potentially result in the program generating 1,200 “new” articles from a single article.

If this is true, what article marketer in his right mind would pay a writer for an original article? At least, this is what the companies who produce article spinning software will try to make you believe.

The problem is that most article spinning software programs aren’t as intelligent as their producers claim. When article spinning programs simply substitute new words and phrases for original ones, the result can be disastrous.

Sentence syntax is often disrupted, rendering the new sentence grammatically incorrect. Tense may end up changing from sentence to sentence or even phrase to phrase. The new article comes out sounding like it was written by a child or someone whose first language is something other than English.

Another major drawback is the inability of software to “think” abstractly. Software programs, of course, don’t really think at all. They simply act on the instructions they have been programmed with. Therefore, an article containing abstract concepts can turn out sounding strange at best and unintelligible at worst after spinning.

For example, take this sentence: “Cilantro is the modern equivalent of the parsley garnish. Dishes topped off with a sprig of cilantro are a picture of contemporary culinary class.”

An article spinning program might isolate keywords and create a spin like this: “Cilantro is the new-fangled equal of the parsley decoration. Plates topped off with a sprig of cilantro are a photograph of non-traditional caste.”

Obviously the spun version of the original phrase conveys a meaning that is far different from the original. Not only is the meaning different, it doesn’t even make sense.

In reality, very few (if any) good article spinning programs exist. Buyers frequently end up having to rewrite most of the rewritten works. Instead of becoming simpler, article marketing becomes a bigger headache, especially if the user isn’t much of a writer him/herself.

Besides creating extra work for the user who has to spend hours proofreading and rewriting, poor articles create a poor image. Badly-spun articles which are difficult to understand lead readers to question the professionalism of the business associated with them. It certainly doesn’t inspire consumer confidence.

Hiring a writer or a company that produces original articles saves time for the article marketer. A reputable writing service typically produces high-quality original articles which have not only been professionally written but also professionally edited. Additionally, they will guarantee that an article will not get flagged as duplicate content, something article spinning software can’t do.

An article marketing campaign can only be as effective as its articles are powerful and professional. Article spinning software simply can’t produce the kind of quality articles that a professional writer can.

Do You Spin When You Distribute Your Articles?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

As an online marketer, do you find yourself busy with daily tasks? Are you so busy with article writing and other activities that you’re cutting corners? Do your efforts to distribute your articles involve article spinning your previously written content? If they do, you’re hurting your reputation as a quality information provider.

Article spinning is you rewriting your existing articles, or sections of those articles. You replace certain elements to avoid penalization in search engine results pages. You don’t want penalties for using duplicate content. Therefore, you replace certain words or phrases with similar words and phrases. You may also move sections around so they’re not in the exact order as the original.

Article spinning is an attempt to convey the exact same information to a reader, with alterations. These alterations are to disguise the fact that you’re presenting nothing new to your audience. It’s old wine in a new bottle. It may look different on first appearance, but after a taste, it’s the same old stuff. Your audience deserves better from you.

When you distribute your articles make sure you’re always getting new, timely content to market. Your readers expect the latest information available on a topic related to the products you promote. They don’t want information that isn’t relevant to today. They can find enough regurgitated articles on the Web. They want fresh information from you.

In fact, the search engines dislike spun articles. They see it as contributing to mediocre content on the Internet. Remember, those who own and operate search engines are businesspeople.

They are selling a service to end-users. They can’t afford to be offering the same old content in their search results. It’s like going to a supermarket and finding the same loaves of bread on the shelf each day. It’s certainly stale and unappealing and something to cause you to switch supermarkets.

The major search engines don’t want users switching away from them. That’s why they need informative, relevant, fresh articles populating the Internet each day. They work to send their users to that vibrant useful content.

To achieve your goals when you distribute your articles, write this fresh content. Write articles like this to grow your business. However, do it to build and maintain your reputation as a knowledgeable information source as well.

When your readers can count on you for up-to-date, practical information, they learn to trust you. Upon becoming used to your first-class content, they continue to look forward to it. This builds your credibility.

Credibility encourages linking back to your website for more information. Now you can further build your business relationship with them. They are apt to take any product and service suggestions you make to heart. Why not, they trust you and it all started with those information-packed new articles you wrote.

Of course, the key to getting new original content to your niche is choosing a quality content distribution service. Great content improperly distributed is a waste of your efforts. To distribute your articles effectively you need a service with certain attributes. Here are five to look for:

They Distribute Your Articles Always

Choose an enterprise that redistributes your articles to any new publishers that sign on with their service. This ensures your older articles are always working for you. A quality content distribution service keeps “in the know” on the new publishers in the market.

They Distribute Your Articles via Article Marketing Automation

You build your income faster if you have a steady flow of articles going out to niche publications. With auto-pilot distribution, you submit articles whenever you feel like it. You then set their distribution dates in advance. This is simplicity of operation and promotes article marketing efficiency.

They Distribute Your Articles Only After Live Article Review

A quality content distribution service employs human editors. These professionals go over your articles to ensure they meet publishers’ requirements. They also offer personalized coaching to help you write better.

They Offer Unlimited Article Distribution

Simply put, they don’t set a ceiling on how many articles you can submit in a subscription period. You pay one fee, one time for your subscription. You then submit as much fresh content as you can muster. Unlimited article distribution of new, not spun content, builds your reputation quickly.

They Offer Distribution and Exposure Reports

A quality content distribution service keeps their subscribers informed on how their articles are doing. They do this with timely distribution and exposure reports. These reports let marketers know where their articles went and how they are performing with top search engines.

Make the commitment to create only 100 percent original new articles every time you write. Don’t spin yourself into oblivion by offering your readers old news. Distribute your articles effectively through a quality content distribution service and watch your business grow.

Ready…Aim…Fire: Shoot Yourself in the Foot with Article Spinners

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

If there’s a common thread that runs through all article spinning products and services, it’s this: they won’t deliver what they say they will.

Why? Because they can’t, that’s why.

Their purpose in life is to produce high volumes of low quality derivative content; the exact thing quality content publishing sites shun.

Article spinners may be able to change enough of the original text to sneak past a duplicate content smack. They may even get by a beginning blogger’s inexperienced eye, but they won’t get through the careful eyes of a quality publisher’s editorial staff. And that’s where you want your articles, right? On high quality, high traffic sites, right?

The ultimate goal of a successful article marker is focused on the needs of a highly targeted reader, not the desire of the author for arbitrary backlinks from nowhere. If you want your articles read, quality content counts; it’s a simple as that.

So, what have you really accomplished if your articles are only picked up by sites looking for quantity of content and not quality? Probably not near as much as you had hoped for when you distributed them. Your work is merely content fodder in the food chain of someone’s little known, rarely visited money site. The only “eyes” that will ever see it are those of the search engine spiders.

You won’t find article spinners at Content Crooner for that reason. It’s not even in the “being considered” phase of thinking. You won’t find the review team approving spun articles, either. Our goal is to help, not destroy, the careers of article marketers in the community.

Don’t take my word for it. Watch the videos below and see what Chris Knight, CEO of Ezine Articles has to say about derivative content produced by spinning articles. (Ezine Articles is the premium publishing site for article marketers on the Internet. It is the target most successful article marketers aim for instead of their foot.)

(Note: These videos are current to the week of 10/29/09.)

As always, the ultimate decision rests with you: the individual author. You can fail or sail in your career as an article marketer. The choice is yours to make.

Until next time,

Mike
