In my last post, I talked about how the thinking of leading companies has shifted from big, infrequent changes to small, quick incremental ones. Now, I will consider how you can apply this outlook in your own business.

The first step is to start small.

A concept that has been popularized of late is called MVP — the Minimum Viable Product. To quote Wikipedia, “A Minimum Viable Product has just those features (and no more) that allows the product to be deployed.”

Small businesses are actually in a much better position than big ones to use this approach. You are free of the bureaucracy and the entrenched constituencies.

You might be surprised how “minimum” MVP can be when you let go of all your preconceived notions. Do you have to automate everything first? No, do it manually at the beginning. Do you have to have ten features? No, the top three will do. Does it have to be gorgeous? No, neat and sweet will do.

The second step is to start now.

What useful thing can you release today? Your customers are starving but you won’t allow them to eat until you have a five course meal prepared. Give them an appetizer. It won’t ruin their appetite.

The whole point of an appetizer is to get their appetite up. (Mmmm, food analogies, now I’m all hungry.) The point is they will be happier with something than they will be with nothing. This requires a mindshift on your part. Start thinking in terms of small plates. (Oops, more food talk.)

The third step isĀ do it often.

Think about how a blog works. How interested are you in following a blogger who posts once a month? How about a tweeter who only updates once a week? It’s about currency. Take this same philosophy to your offerings. Frequency is the watchword.

So you are ready to act small, now, and often. Would you like some tools to help you? Watch for my next post.

To your success,
