I’m So Totally Blogging This – How to Build Your Personal Brand
Have you ever read a book more than once? Usually, the second read is just as interesting even though you already know what happens.
One reason for that is because now you know the characters. The first time, the opening chapters may not stick much since you are busy learning their traits. But the second time, you notice things you didn’t see before. You make connections.
Blogs are similar. Develop the character, whether fictitious or simply yourself, with each blog post. Let the reader learn a little more about your personality.
This, in turn, becomes your personal brand. What makes you stand out from the crowd? What is your “thing”?
If you have a “thing” in mind, focus on building upon it with each new blog post. Success doing so makes you more interesting. With the huge amount of other bloggers in your niche, you’ll do well to be known for something.
Now, how do you build your personal brand? You must possess the ability to translate your attitude into words. An effective writer puts their “energy” into whatever piece they are writing. Readers feel what the words don’t say and this intangible effect is just as important as the literal message.
The primary focus of your blog is: your attitude. Whatever type of brand you’re going for, you will destroy it with a bad attitude.
You may be very knowledgeable within your niche and give good information, but if readers feel you have a bad attitude, perhaps even a complaining one, they may be turned away. Good content is helpful content; and “helpful” is easily associated with other positive qualities. Your content, and your attitude, must be positive.
The next logical step, is to be human. Be real. Real is believable; it is genuine. Share your interests, your opinions and your experiences.
Relationships are based on connection. Give readers something to connect to. If you want a rapport with clients, readers, or just an online presence, make it appealing.
A robot may be programmed to perform a task, but only humans have passion for it. If others don’t feel your passion, your human-ness, there is no connection. And it’s already proven what power emotions have in the marketplace.
An extension of being human is having fun. No doubt you enjoy what you do, otherwise you would change it.
It’s quite possible you took the leap of developing your personal brand because of the unenjoyment of past employment. You might as well spread the enjoyment around.
Being social will take you places, as will reciprocity. But don’t look at being social as a business transaction, a sort of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours followed by a handshake.” Enjoy it!
Get out on the web, blog, tweet, be passionate and live. The world is your playground, and always remember that your personal brand is you. Recommend your brand through everything you do.
