What’s the key to ranking in the search engines? It sure seems like it’s a moving target.
Ask any “expert” how to get your site ranked well in the search engines, and the answer will change based on the latest trend or theory. Some of the advice is spot on, some is confusing…and some is downright wrong.
So what to do?
To be found on Google and the other major search engines, follow their own advice. The key lies in your “PageRank” (PR). This number, between 1 (least favorable) and 10 (best rank), is assigned based on how much credibility Googles gives your site.
How does Google decide your PR?
According to their own Site Owner’s Help Section:
“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high quality sites that link to their pages.”
That’s pretty straightforward advice. To improve your PageRank, increase the number of backlinks from other credible sites. And the most effective and search-engine friendly way to build these backlinks is by distributing your original content and making it available to publishers, site owners and directories.
Content distribution is your key to quality backlinks.
Here’s how this work:
You write an article that relates to your industry or your specialty. For example, if you are a tax accountant, you write a 500 word article on “Money-Saving Tax Tips.” You submit that article to a content distribution service; that service makes it available to tens of thousands of publishers, bloggers, newsletter editors, content site owners and article directories. And that’s when the magic starts.
You see, each time a site owner or publisher posts your article, they also publish your “About the Author” information and a link back to your site. And we already know that each link you get from a credible source helps to improve your PageRank.
As the number of links grows, your PR improves. For best results, make sure you submit an ongoing stream of fresh content, at least one or two articles per week. You’ll not only improve your PageRank; you’ll also build your reputation as an expert in your field, and drive fresh traffic to your site from all those incoming links.
So forget the “fad of the week” and focus on what works…building a steady stream of relevant backlinks pointing to your site. Google on!
